	VANDERBERG PLAYED BY: Ken Lynch SPECIES: Human Male Vanderberg's distress call was answered by the USS Enterprise, whose crew discovered the existence of the Horta race on Janus VI. Though Vanderberg first wanted the Horta destroyed, when he realized it was a sentient being whose children had been killed, he was appropriately remorseful. Vanderberg heavily benefited from an agreement negotiated by Enterprise science officer Spock – the Horta used their natural tunneling abilities to open up new sources of mineral wealth for the miners.
	ED APPEL   PLAYED BY: Brad Weston SPECIES: Human Male   Ed Appel was the chief processing engineer of the mining colony on Janus VI. When a mysterious creature began killing miners, Appel was the only one to see it and live. He only got a glimpse of it, describing it as "shaggy", and even shot it, though his less effective phaser type-1 meant the creature escaped unharmed.
	SCHMITTER   PLAYED BY: Biff Elliot  SPECIES: Human Male   He was assigned to guard duty when the mother Horta began a murderous rampage, killing fifty miners. He was killed moments after relieving Sam.
	GUARD   PLAYED BY: Jon Cavett SPECIES: Human Male   This crewman served on a security team ordered by Lieutenant Commander Giotto to hunt for the Horta on Janus VI. He was scouting alone when the Horta attacked him. By the time help arrived, he had been completely dissolved by acid.
	LIEUTENANT COMMANDER GIOTTO   PLAYED BY: Barry Russo SPECIES: Human Male   Giotto and a team of eight security officers assisted Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock in searching for the mother Horta on Janus VI.
