The Enterprise plays host to Federation ambassadors on their way to the Babel Conference, including Sarek of Vulcan -- Mr. Spock's father. En route to Babel, Tellarite ambassador Gav is murdered and Sarek is the prime suspect, but he soon suffers a Vulcan heart attack. Soon thereafter, Captain Kirk is critically injured as well leaving Mr. Spock torn between his duties as a Starfleet officer and his duties as a son.
