Stone refused to adjourn to the starbase, and shared the risks the starship's crew faced. From the bridge, Stone and the court officers heard the "testimony" of Finney by monitoring his confrontation with Kirk.

Cogley defended James T. Kirk in his court martial, at the recommendation of Lt. Areel Shaw, following the apparent murder of fellow Starfleet officer Lieutenant Commander Finney.

Shaw and Kirk had been romantically linked in 2262. The relationship did not work out, but they parted as friends. Despite this personal history, Shaw maintained her professional integrity and presented a strong case against her former lover that was only refuted after an investigation began by Commander Spock revealed the truth of Finney's frame up.
   
 LIEUTENANT COMMANDER BEN FINNEY

As a young officer, Finney spent an unusually long period as an instructor at Starfleet Academy, a circumstance that frustrated his ambitions. Finney loved the service, and hoped to command his own starship in the future. In the early 2250s, he met and befriended a young midshipman, James Kirk. The two became such close friends that Finney named his daughter Jame after Kirk. Letters sent home to his wife described their friendship and his esteem for the junior officer. When Finney was finally assigned to a starship, aboard the USS Republic, Ensign Kirk joined him.
   
 LIEUTENANT TIMOTHY
 
PLAYED BY: Winston DeLugo
SPECIES: Human Male
 
He graduated with James T. Kirk from Starfleet Academy and was a mutual friend of Kirk and Ben Finney. Timothy and Kirk served together during the Vulcanian expedition, they would not see each other again for some time after that.

While on a layover at Starbase 11, Timothy confronted Kirk following the apparent death of Finney, blaming Kirk for killing his friend. He was at the time, sharing a drink at the bar with his friend Mike.
   
 JAME FINNEY
 
PLAYED BY: Alice Rawlings
SPECIES: Human Female
 
When it was believed that her father was killed through Captain Kirk's negligence, Jame accused Kirk of murdering her father. She later rescinded her accusation and tried to protect him from losing his command.
   
 KRANSNOVSKY
 
PLAYED BY: Bart Conrad
SPECIES: Human Male
 
Krasnovsky's ship was at Starbase 11 when the USS Enterprise conducted its layover there. As a ranking officer, Krasnovsky served on the board conducting the court martial of a fellow captain, James T. Kirk, when Kirk was accused of the apparent death of Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Finney.
